i love how the show helps people view things from another perspective and that they dive in deeper and show more sides of each character 😌 it makes them look and feel more real.
I haven’t read the taping report. At this point I feel like I have no reason to nor do I wan to. I know enough. I wanna be optimistic and say things will be ok, I haven’t forgotten that Amy deserves this, the time to think, it sucks it hurts beings how my relationship is on and off and shamy is one thing I could hold on to for hope as silly as it sounds.
Sheldon is not fucking asexual. He never was asexual, is not currently asexual and, if you pay attention to all the POSTER SIZED FUCKING FORESHADOWING HINTS by the writers, he will never be asexual.
I feel like you may have missed a few episodes where the writers drew attention to Sheldon’s asexuality, which has been an ongoing and consistent theme throughout the series. Here are some of the relevant scenes:
Penny (in hallway): Okay, you guys, look, I know this is none of my business, but I just, I have to ask, what’s Sheldon’s deal? Leonard: What do you mean “deal”? Penny: You know, like what’s his deal? Is it girls? Guys? Sock puppets? Leonard: Honestly, we’ve been operating under the assumption that he has no deal. Penny: Come on, everybody has a deal. Howard: Not Sheldon. Over the years, we’ve formulated many theories about how he might reproduce. I’m an advocate of mitosis. (2x06, The Cooper-Nowitzki Theorem)
Amy: Noted. Now, before this goes any further, you should know that all forms of physical contact up to and including coitus are off the table. Sheldon: May I buy you a beverage? (3x23, The Lunar Excitation)
Sheldon: Agreed. Amy, I find myself wondering if we should actually engage in coitus at least one time in our relationship. Bazinga. Bedtime. Please show yourself out. (4x05, The Desperation Emanation)
Sheldon: Penny, all my life, I have been uncomfortable with the sort of physical contact that comes easily to others, hand-shaking, hugging, prostate exams. But I’m working on it, you know? Just recently, I had to put VapoRub on Amy’s chest. A year ago, that would have been unthinkable. (6x14, The Cooper/Kripke Inversion))
Sheldon: Wait. Hold on. I believe screw it, I’m going in is what I said to your mother last night. Don’t worry, I didn’t really say that. I find the concept of coitus ridiculous and off-putting. (6x20, The Tenure Turbulence)
He is arguably demisexual, which falls under the asexuality spectrum, but he’s definitely not allosexual, and to imply that he is is erasive of asexuality and also suggests that you haven’t been paying attention to scenes like the above.
I will give you that the evidence is there for him potentially being demisexual, however, that’s not what the above confession was getting at now is it. Asexuality and demisexuality are in no ways the same thing. He clearly now has an interest in sexual matters as evidenced by his instinctual touching and kissing his girlfriend, his admitting to Penny that he has urges, and his comment about foreplay when talking about them making out. And that’s just to name a few examples. Though Sheldon’s deal was seemingly more in line with asexuality in seasons 1-3, it was never confirmed and the writers are now clearly steering him towards sexual intimacy. So again, not asexual. Never was, evidently not going to be either.
I’m interested to know how you interpret ‘Don’t worry, I didn’t really say that. I find the concept of coitus ridiculous and off-putting’ then if not as a statement of asexuality?
(I seriously am interested, I’m not trying to have a go at you, I want to know how you’re interpreting that statement, because I’m not sure how else it can be interpreted.)
No offence taken 😊. Its hard to say, cause to know for sure we’d have to be in Sheldon’s head. However, from watching the show since the beginning and seeing how his character evolved, I think up to sometime in season six, he just thought the whole premise was beneath him.
I get the sense that up until that point he had constructed an understanding of his identity where that kind of physical stuff was seen to him as being part of the baser urges he thought were the trappings of lesser minds. I think one thing we have to remember about him is that he was put into an adult world at an unusually young age due to his brilliance. So when he joined the adult world he had no real interest yet in urges, sex etc. So not having those urges at that time, he decided it wasn’t for him. But that was before those urges even had a chance to manifest. And being the creature of habit that he is, he etched that concept of himself into stone.
Then Amy comes into the picture and she starts challenging that etched in concept of himself. And honestly up until very recently I think that modifying that idea he has that he’s above it all has scared the wits out of him. So that comment to me, when added to the whole rest of his character evolution, is him fighting like mad to protect his self imposed concept of who he thinks he is.
Could there have been a case for Sheldon being asexual? Absolutely. But since about mid season 6 I would say no. And his physical attraction to Amy is growing, not decreasing or staying stagnant so the possibility of him being asexual has definitely been ruled out. He still could be demisexual though, for sure.
Reblogging just to praise the amazing display of refreshingly discerning, civilized, polite and well-thought discussion of grandly opposite views of a topic. I rarely see this on tumblr and it restores my faith in this platform. Thank you :)
I too clearly saw in the beginning of the shows run a more asexual Sheldon. But it was clear the writers never confirmed that because they had plans for the character to evolve. I’d like to point out that Sheldon’s ‘ridiculous and off putting’ comment was before the SIK. I think long dormant feelings emerged for Sheldon after that. While he is obviously still not ready for sex, it’s now obvious he thinks about it. Even wants it.
I completely agree that Sheldon is demisexual. And, for those of us playing at home, “Demisexuality” is “a sexual orientation in which someone feels sexual
attraction only to people with whom they have an emotional bond. Most
demisexuals feel sexual attraction rarely compared to the general
population, and some have little to no interest in sexual activity.“
On a completely different topic, who thinks this is finally the season Bernie will get pregnant???
She and Howie just had their 3rd anniversary, so they’re technically not newlyweds anymore. I ADORE Stuart but the writers can’t rely solely on his b-plot to keep the couple fresh. Plus I’m ready for Stuart to find his own permanent love interest (notice I didn’t say lady).
I’m open to anything writers … just sayin’. ;)
Yes there is also Howard’s new half brother to consider and the possible hijinks attached to that, but besides bickering about money and chores are we going to get any baby talk? What’s next since we only have 2 possibly 3 more seasons left?
I’d personally like to meet a couple of Bernie’s siblings too. And they’re all over 5'10"! But they are all terrified of Bernie.
Hugely agree. I think Simon and Melissa have been let down by slightly dull/predictable storylines during Season 8 (apart from the death of Mrs Wolowitz but for obvious reasons that couldn’t be helped). Not that haven’t enjoyed them but they seemed to have been pushed aside for some bigger stories this year. Looking forward to a bit of a shake up next season.
